This is the easiest crochet heart pattern ever! π
Okay, I know I’m making a huge claim here. And there’s like 50,000 heart crochet patterns out there, and of course I can’t look at every one, so who’s to say this one is really the easiest?
I’ll tell you why. π
1. This heart crochet pattern is really frigging easy. The first round is all double crochet and a slip stitch. It gets its heart shape all in the second round.
2. There’s only two rounds.
3. There are instructions with pictures below the pattern. Not only is it easy, you get to see how easy it is.
And of course these are great to make for Valentine’s Day! π
Do you need this in bigger sizes? I’ve gotcha covered: Hearts In 3 Sizes Free Crochet Patterns

Abbreviations:
sl st = slip stitch

Round 2:
ch 3; 3 trc in same st.

3 trc in next st.
3 trc, 1 dc in next st.
sl st in first st.
Cut yarn, tie off, and weave in ends.
See how easy? No? Then take a looksee below. The pictures show the pattern being worked from left to right because I am left handed. This pattern is symmetrical, so it can be worked either left to right or right to left and achieve the same results.
Chain 5; join with slip stitch to form a loop. Chain 3 up from loop.
Double crochet 10 stitches.
Slip stitch finishes round 1.
Chain up from slip stitch to start round 2.
Work the first 3 triple crochet in the same stitch as the slip stitch.
Halfway point on the second round; just finished the single crochet 1, double crochet 1, single crochet 1 in the same stitch (forms the point at the bottom of the heart).
Finishing the second round; slip stitch in the first stitch (the stitch that you chained up from to begin the second round.
All finished! See, told you they were easy! π
So, what can you do with these once you make a bunch of them? They can be used for garlands and wreaths, or stitched together for scarves or an afghan. Or, you can just toss them about a table, shelf or counter. They’re so darned cute they stand on their own.
Oh, and fair warning: like granny squares, these can be really addicting. You’ll wake up to dozens of them lying about the house without any memory of making them. Which really isn’t a bad thing, unless you have a crochet heart phobia.
And remember, if you need this in bigger sizes, I’ve gotcha covered! Hearts In 3 Sizes Free Crochet Pattern
Let me know what you think, if you have any other uses for them, and if this is the easiest heart crochet pattern that you’ve ever seen or not!

Lovelry pattern! Where do you put the 9 dc in rd 1 though? i started with a magic ring instead, had 10 stiches including the ch3 in the end. is that correct too?

Michelle says
Hi Anne!
OOPS! I forgot to include this little tidbit before round 1: ch 5; join with sl st to form a loop. Thank you so much for bringing that to my attention! I have updated the pattern.
And yes, you should have 10 stitches at the end of round one.
Thanks again!
Michelle
Brenda says
I use these to embellish the chemo caps that I make. I pin them on the hats so they can take the heart off and use the pin separate!
Michelle says
Very cool! Thanks for the tip! π

Laine says
Hi am crocheting a heart garland for my friends wedding decorations, ( outdoor bush wedding ) I would like to use ur easy heart pattern but would like to make the heart twice the size. I am new to crochet and have learnt online so am not too sure how or where to increase / decrease if this is what I need to do. Kind regards Laine
Michelle says
Hi Laine!
Sorry for the delay in replying… I’ve been dealing with some illness in my family.
In order to make this heart larger, I would make a third round and double the amount of stiches that are in the second round. So, do 2 sc for every l sc in the second round, 2 dc for every 1 dc in the second round, and so on. You will probably have to play with this a bit, but this will get you started.
I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know!

Sam says
I must not understand this pattern because I tried several times and the math doesn’t make sense to me. I can get it to work if I do a magic circle, chain three, and then ten double crochets in the circle to start. I’m just really curious as to what I am doing wrong! I have made ten of these though, and they are awesome, so thank you for the pattern!
Michelle says
Hi Sam!
The part of the pattern before round 1 (ch 5; join with sl st to form a loop) is essentially the same thing as doing a magic circle, so essentially you just exchanged that part for the magic circle. If it works that way for you, then great! π I’m glad you like the pattern otherwise and I hope that clears it up!
jess says
I understand where Sam is coming from about the math, With your pattern you call for 3chain (counting it as a dc) and 9 dc adding up to 10 dc. But in round 2 you have instructions that use 11 dc, hence why Sam and I both felt the need to make 3 chains plus 10 dc at the beginning. Unless I don’t understand where you put the extra stitches. But thanks for the pattern anyways!
Michelle @ The Painted Hinge says
I apologize- I wasn’t following Sam’s explanation of the problem. Yes, you are both correct- the first round should have 11 stitches. I’ve corrected the pattern. Thank you both for catching my error, and sorry for all the confusion! π
Amanda says
Thank you for the free simple pattern. I added a chain and tassel at the end to make a bookmark.
Michelle says

Beth Havlik says
Wonderful! Thank you for the easy instructions. Once I remembered how to do the different stitches it was very easy to follow. Only took me 3 trys π I plan on using them for my classes. Have you heard of the book, The Kissing Hand? The parents can give the kids a heart to take to class and they will be reused every day they come in and need one. I better go, have a lot more to make! Thank you for sharing!

vidu says
After chain 3 & 9 dc you have to do sl st and then start round 2 with chain 3 & 3 trc in same stitch etc ? i am little confused & i am learning crochet through internet so asked
Michelle @ The Painted Hinge says
Hi Vidu!
Yes, you are correct with how you wrote it out to me, so you are doing fine. π If you have any more questions, please let me know!
Kim says
Mine is forming a cup. Am I just doing it to tightly?
Michelle @ The Painted Hinge says
Hi Kim! Yes, it sounds like you might be doing it too tightly. Try doing your stitches looser and see if that helps.
Annne says
i am going to make a few and connect them to make a pacifier holder! how sweet these are

Dear Michelle, you are a clever lady, just had a quick go, and have a lovely little heart. I am next going to try your idea out on rags, like a rag rug heart? I am having a go at these ideas towards Christmas.Wish me luck, and THANK YOU. Best Wishes, Kathy

Nicola says
Well, I’m a bit of an imbecile when it comes to crochet, and I’m visually impaired which doesn’t help! I cannot follow a pattern through because intend to wing it at the end and everything ends up wonky. I did this and it looked absolutely nothing like a heart until the very last stitch and boom just like that I had crocheted my first ever heart!! Wow. Thanks!!
Michelle says
LOL you’re so welcome Nicola! π Thank you for sharing your experience with my pattern- I always love hearing my patterns are easy to follow! π
Dawn says
I must be reading the pattern wrong, no one else seems to be having trouble. lol Are you supposed to do 6 total trc at the beginning or is it the same 3 trc mentioned twice(round 2)? Also, when you slip stitch at the end of round 1, is that into the first chain of the chain 3 or the 3rd? Thanks! It’s really cute!
Michelle says
Hi Dawn,
At the start of round 2 you are right about doing 6 trc total- 3 trc go into the same stitch as the chain 3, and the 3 trc go into the next stitch.
When you sl st into round one, you sl st into the top of the chain you made at the beginning of the round.
I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.
Tess says
Hi, I am fairly new to crocheting, so can’t tell from looking at the photos; are your patterns written in US terms or UK? If US I will convert! Looking forward to giving them a go!
Michelle says
Hi Tess! The patten is written in US terms.
Cindy H. says
I’ll have to try this when I can find some examples of what the different stitches are. π I’m new at this but will definitely try the pattern. Making hearts for the #peytonheartproject. http://www.thepeytonheartproject.org/
Michelle says
Hi Cindy! The stitches are all common crochet stitches, so you can find directions on how to do them on the web and on YouTube if you are better at visual learning. Very thoughtful of you to want to make these for the Peyton Heart Project! π
Mackenzie says
I’m afraid I don’t understand the pattern. After I chain 3, do I dc through the ring I made or the first ch of the ch 3?
Michelle says
Hi Mackenzie! You dc through the ring you made.
Constance Elsman says
I found this pattern on Ravelry after trying several other “easy” patterns. In about 20 minutes I had the heart I was trying to make for a project all day. I did change the pattern in that I started from a magic circle, ch 3 and then did the 10 dc.
Michelle says
Thanks Constance! I’m glad you found this pattern to actually be easy. π I use the magic ring quite a bit these days, and I now include it in patterns as an alternative to chaining to form a ring.
