Hey Friends!
Is it me, or did Christmas come extremely early this year? I know it comes earlier and earlier every year, but I wasn’t prepared for it to start on November 1st! At this rate I’ll have to start getting my Christmas decorations out in July in order to keep up with everyone else in the blogesphere!
It’s going to be at least a couple of weeks before I can get my Christmas decorations up, so I’m hoping this Christmas star ornament free crochet pattern will hold you over until then. It’s a really easy pattern, and you can whip up a bunch of these up in no time to hang on your tree! Like I said, I don’t have my Christmas decorations up, but I hung them on my wired frame and put them on top of my entryway sideboard to display.
Below is the step by step pattern with pictures, followed by the pattern again in its entirety without pictures for those who want to print it out. I am no longer writing my patterns in crochet “shorthand” because it seems doing it that way confuses a lot of people. I am a left-handed crocheter, so if the pictures look jacked up to you, thatโs probably why. These directions will work whether you are left or right-handed.

1. Make a magic circle OR chain 5 and join the ends to make a loop (do whichever one works best for you). Single crochet 11 stitches inside the loop and join with a slip stitch to close the round.
2. Chain 2 and turn. Single crochet 1 stitch into the same stitch as the chain.
3. Single crochet 2 stitches into every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch to close the round. (I started one of the double crochets from the next step, so that’s why the circle doesn’t look perfectly round).
4. Skip one stitch, double crochet 5 stitches all in the next stitch, skip one stitch, then slip stitch in the next stitch. This is called making a shell stitch.
5. Do the directions in step number 4 for a total of five times.
6. Make a slip stitch in each of the next two stitches. Make a half double crochet, a double crochet, chain one, and another half double crochet into the next stitch (in other words, the half crochet, double crochet, chain one and half double crochet all go in the same stitch). Make a slip stitch in each of the next three stitches.
7. Do the directions in step number 6 for a total of five times. Cut yarn, tie off, and weave in ends.
Here is the pattern again in its entirety for those who want to print out the directions without the pictures:

Love these stars especially the glitter yarn. I think I’ll make some into a garland. Thanks !

Thank you Claire! Making a garland with these is an awesome idea!
Linda Keesee says
Your star ornaments are cute, and I think they would make a pretty Christmas decor just leaving them hanging on the chicken wire frame and placing on a mantle. Thanks for the tutorial! Pinning!
Michelle says
Thank you Linda! I was thinking the same thing… they may just end up staying in that frame for the season! ๐

Michelle, I love this because it reminds me of my maternal grandmother who taught me to crochet as a girl. I have such fond memories of her, so thank you for the reminder! The pairing of the soft yarn ornaments against the ornately framed chicken wire is PERFECTION! Thank you for sharing @Vintage Charm. Blessings, Cecilia

I am having a little trouble with the pattern. I’m not sure what I am doing wrong, but after I do the 11 single crochets through the ring, it looks lopsided. It looks like 11 is too many and one section always seems too big.
Michelle says
Hi Alli,
I’m sorry you are having trouble with the pattern. Let’s see if I can help. If it seems like the ring is too small, you can add an extra chain or two when you make the ring. You can also use a magic circle in place of the ring if that makes it easier.
I hope that helps! Let me know if it doesn’t.

Soooo excited to follow a left handed crochet person! As a lefty, itโs so much easier to look at photos and not have to visually flip what I see. Will follow you for sure.
Michelle says
Thanks so much Cindy! Us lefties have to stick together! ๐
Victoria A. Hesselgesser says
Love the pattern, need to make it bigger. Can you help?
Dian says
I’m a lefty and I loved the pictures. I didn’t have to extrapolate; everything looked just like mine. So quick and so simple. I have lots of sparkly Christmas yarn so I’m going to make a batch for my grandson’s kindergarten teacher. They will be great for winter crafts, or the letter “S” – star, snowflake. Thank you so much.
Michelle says
You’re very welcome! It’s always nice to hear from fellow lefties that are using and enjoying my patterns! ๐
